Report by Victor DeGreat – While in the lower chambers, it was a different ball game; in the red chambers, the Godswill Akpabio, the newly elected President of the 10th Senate of the national assembly is the toast of Nigerian women in the manner he celebrated and prayed for his wife, Ekaette.

Godswill Akpabio during the delivery of his inaugural speech took a paragraph and time to eulogise his better half in glowing words of admiration and affirmation befitting of her on the floor of the senate.

The new senate president, Akpabio has shown himself homely and takes family seriously.  He is a true husband, who is proud of the accomplishment of his wife as a lover of Nigeria and humanity.

He noted that despite the limited number of invites, he is grateful that his wife, Ekaette and his last daughter are amongst dignitaries to witness the proceedings for the inauguration of the 10th national assembly of the senate.

Akpabio’s action caught our attention for very obvious reasons. The overbearing attitude of politicians while in office, the rate of divorce, and strive amongst family members.  When these politicians ascends to any political office they intend to erode family values and moral under the carpet.

Gratefully, Akpabio is proud of Ekaette is wife.  It thus, becomes an historic moment for her and Nigerian women who stand with, by and beside their spouse despite stormy times.  From being a commissioner in Akwa Ibo State to a governor and minister of Niger Delta affairs and today the senate president of 10th Senate, Ekaette still remains with Godswill Akpabio.

This inaugural speech will remain a legacy document in the National Assembly and Ekaette Godswill Akpabio would be remember in the red chambers.  Akpabio has set a precedent in the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria that politics should not tear apart family values and intimacy.

Indeed, from the start, we find the President of the 10th Senate as a man that holds family cohesion dear to his heart. The invitation are limited, yet, he never allowed his position to get to him but make sure his wife and one of his child is present.  His joke about his last daughter, hoping to find a suitor amongst is colleague is daring or is it overboard?

Not just finding a date, but he would be proud to be a father in-law to Senator, if there is an available and suitable bachelor amongst members of the 10th senator to marry his last daughter. This joke caught his colleague laughing heartily.

Akpabo’s swift switch to the subject of this piece is gratifying.  It shows Ekaette holds a greater part of his heart and his success allowing their daughter to find her owe part.

In his words, “my dear wife, congratulations for being a great woman; a woman with great virtue, an exemplary woman and one that loves Nigeria and one that loves humanity.  May God continue to prosper, and bless you.  Grant you peace’, Senate President Akpabio ended.

Ekaette’s character and disposition gives immediate validation to her husband’s testament while in the red chambers.  Unlike others, she remained on her seat and only stood when her husband mentioned her in his speech.  You, noticed, while he was still talking about her, she remained standing in honour and submission to headship of her husband.

Nigerian women should be proud that one of their own is so honoured in that historic occasion.  Akpabio’s action is unique, revered, and scared, so is the red chambers and the event held on Tuesday 13th June 2023 that bestowed such honour on women particularly Ekaette.
