The People’s Democratic Party PDP in Rivers State has concluded the senatorial primaries in three senatorial districts in the state.

Deputy Governor of Rivers State, Dr Ipalibo Banigo Harry emerged as the senatorial candidate for Rivers West Senatorial district, Senator Barry Impigi, a serving senator made it as the PPD candidate for Rivers South East and former Commissioner for Education, Chief Allwell Oyinsor got the ticket for Rivers Central.

In Ahoada town, Bori and Port Harcourt where the primaries was held, the three candidates who stood for elections were unopposed.

A delegate at the Port Harcourt venue, Mrs Sylvia Stanley noted that the process was peaceful and successful.

“We the PDP people, we are peaceful people, peaceful family, whatever we are doing, there is nothing like violence, it was very successful” she added

While reacting to his victory, Chief Allwell Oyinsor stated that if he eventually win the 2023 Senate seat, he would do his best to represent the district effectively.

He added that the problem of the people is how to address their environmental issues arising from the energy and maritime businesses operating in the senatorial district and called for the review of the extant laws in the country to be addressed if elected or not.

” I am very prepared to represent my people but I’m trying to look at laws concerning marine business, what is the law saying is it supporting our people? The laws have been made in a way that our people cannot participate, I will try to look into the laws and ensure that our people participate effectively”

However, a Port Harcourt based Public Affairs Analyst, Mr Chinedu Ohagbulam expressed dissatisfaction with the process saying it failed to adopt a democratic approach that would have competitive spirit to bring out the best person to represent the people.

” It wasn’t democratic in any way, it was just like an arrangement where just one man is selected and given the ticket and they pretended that people are delegates voting, people that can generate ideas are not given the chance, it is the touts that are taking over”

Mr Chinedu Ohagbulam advised that if democracy is to take root in the country, more opportunities must be given to Nigerians to test their mettle.

The governorship primaries us expected to hold on the 26th of May, 2022 has been overshadowed by a suit brought by Dr Farah Dagogo against the PDP for excluding him from the screening. Ipalibo Banigo Wins PDP Senatorial Seat
