It is wise to begin the New Year with a grateful heart. Today’s Memory Verse enjoins us to enter God’s gates with thanksgiving. It means that thanksgiving is like a password to come into His presence. In other words, thanksgiving makes God’s presence accessible to you and makes you acceptable to Him.

What is thanksgiving? It is an expression of gratitude for what we have received and what we will receive and enjoy. It is also an acknowledgement of the divine favour bestowed on us by God. When we look back, we will discover that there have been challenges, tests and trials but God has been faithful to us in all circumstances. He has kept us and not allowed the waters to overwhelm us nor the stream to go over our souls. Therefore, God who has always been gracious to us, deserves the genuine expression of our appreciation.

Beloved, look around you! Are you the most holy and most well behaved? The Bible tells us that “it is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because His compassion fail not” (Lamentation 3:22). Therefore, I enjoin you to make giving of thanks to God a lifestyle because the best things of life that you and all His creatures enjoy are free gifts from Him — the breath in your nostrils, sunshine and rain, His love, salvation, healing, deliverance, provision, and so on. Give thanks to God at all times and for all things. That is His will for you in Christ Jesus (1 Thessalonians 5:18). When you express gratitude for what you have received, you are bound to receive more.

The word of God says, “It is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord…” (Psalm 92:1). The converse would mean — it is a bad thing not to give thanks to God. Some people are of the opinion that they have no reason to thank the Lord. They are wrong. As someone said, “Those who can think can thank”. Beginning the year with a grateful heart and continuing in like manner will bring you unending happiness and fulfilment throughout the year. The difference between happy people and unhappy people is their level of gratitude.

Beloved, remember to express genuine gratitude to God and everyone who have been a blessing to your life. As you thank the Lord, His light will shine more upon you and every form of darkness will disappear.

I wish you a happy and prosperous New Year.
