Rivers Government Bans Indiscriminate Distribution of Water by Vendors

The Rivers State government bans the indiscriminate distribution of water by water vendors between the hours of 7am to 6pm as part of measures to ensure water quality standards and regulations are met in the state.

Commissioner for Water Resources and Rural Development, Dr Tamunosisi Gogo Jaja announced this in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital saying the move is to protect the lives of residents and the investment of those genuinely involved in the business of water distribution in the state.

He advised water producers to use the prescribed standard micron for the bottling and packaging of water for consumption and desist from using substandard micron.

He added that the exposure of water to the sun rays causes some chemical reactions that are dangerous to human organs.

Dr Gogo Jaja emphasized on the need for water producers to cover their water or products while distributing them and directed that all water distributors should brand their vehicles with their names, telephone numbers and addresses for easy identification of their products.

He called on the public to report companies who distribute their water uncovered and those with unbranded vehicles.

President of the Water Producers Association of Nigeria, WAPAN, Mr Egberi Markson and Mr Agape Onu, President of the Association of Table Water Producers of Nigeria, ATWAP pledged to work with the Ministry to improve surveillance in a bid to eliminating quacks in the sector.
