
100 Children Participate in Maiden Edition of Orphanage Games and Sports in Yenagoa
About a hundred children from Five Orphanage homes in BAYELSA State at the weekend participated in the maiden edition of 2025 Orphanage Games and Sports.
The Orphanage Games and Sports, which was an initiative put together by a Corps Member, Ms Victoria Abiye Kiolawson, witnessed the participation of Children from Orphanage homes in Athletics, Sack race, Music and Dance performance.
The visioneer of the Charity Inter-House sports for the Orphanages, Ms Victoria Abiye Kiolawson, said the goal of the games is to give the children visibility so that more people could now see that the children have sporting potentials and talents could be discovered in orphanage homes.
She also called on the management of the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) to make it a mandatory community Service session for corps members in Orphanage homes in order to encourage interaction service to children in needs.
Kiolawson also welcomed the idea of the State Government organising similar games for Orphanage homes and called on the state government to subsidise the medical care of children in such homes and support them with educational supports.
Among the participating orphanage homes are the Daisy’s Home for Special Children, the Daniel and Dorothy Orphanage, the Victorian Orphanage and Child Care centre, the Destiny Child Orphanages and Homes and the Blossom Home for the Deaf and the Blind.
The State Commissioner of Sports, Hon. Daniel Igali, commended the organiser of the games and muted that the State Government attention have been drawn to the need to support such sporting competition and being out the best in children with special needs.
Hon. Daniel Igali, represented by a Director in the Ministry of Sports, Micheal Alakere, said the sporting competition among the children of the Orphanages was interesting and said it should be a partnership between the private sector and the state government that will work.
Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Women,Children Affairs,Empowerment and Social Development, Agnes Oloye commended the vision of the organisers and promised that the state government will look closely at the idea of a sporting activities for the children of orphanage homes and key into it.
The Programme Adviser of the Games and the representative of the Construction giant, Mega Star, Yemi Elegberun, described the competition as a show of support from mankind towards children with special needs, ” it is a giant leap from mankind. It may look like a small leap but this leap will go beyond Bayelsa State.”
