A Tribute to Distinguished Senator Emmanuel Paulker at 70
By Professor Steve Azaiki, OON – At seventy, Distinguished Senator Emmanuel Paulker stands tall as one of the rare statesmen whose journey from the swampy creeks of the Niger Delta to the Senate chambers of the Federal Republic of Nigeria tells a story of humility, service, and destiny fulfilled. Born in the ancient kingdom of Oguan people, nurtured by the tides of the Epie-Atissa people in present-day Yenagoa, Paulker’s life has been defined by courage, faith, and a tireless devotion to his people.
From his early days as a classroom teacher, where he inspired young minds with the mysteries of hydrogen theories and chemical formulas, to his rise as the first Commissioner from Epie in Bayelsa State, Senator Paulker has remained a shining example of how service, discipline, and integrity can shape a man’s destiny. When Bayelsa State was created under the administration of General Sani Abacha, Paulker’s story merged with that of his people’s liberation — from marginalization to self-determination.
In the Nigerian Senate, he distinguished himself as a voice of wisdom, fairness, and patriotism. Rising to the position of Minority Chief Whip, he became one of the most influential Bayelsans in the national political space, second only to President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR, during that period. His record of legislative diligence and quiet diplomacy won him admiration across political divides.
It was therefore no surprise when a grateful nation conferred upon him one of its highest honours — Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) — a fitting recognition for a man who gave his best to Nigeria and to humanity. Senator Paulker’s leadership reflects the timeless truth in the words of John Quincy Adams, who said:
“If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more, you are a leader.”
Indeed, Paulker’s life has inspired a generation of young Ijaws and Nigerians to believe in the power of education, integrity, and hard work. His politics has never been about self-promotion or noise, but about principle, loyalty, and service.
Even at 70, his relevance remains undimmed, his wisdom sharper than ever, his hope for a greater Nigeria still alive. As we celebrate him, we are reminded of the words of Nelson Mandela:
“What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.”
Senator Paulker has made that difference — in Bayelsa, in the Niger Delta, and in Nigeria. He has shown that one can be both a patriot and a gentleman; both firm and humble; both a politician and a statesman.
My dear brother, at seventy, may the Almighty God continue to bless and strengthen you. May your wisdom continue to guide the young and inspire those who serve. You have given much to your people and your nation — and hope, as you have often said, is still alive.
Happy 70th Birthday, Distinguished Senator Emmanuel Paulker, CON — teacher, statesman, patriot, and true son of the Niger Delta.
