The Greeks and Romans worshipped many gods and believed that evil spirits would invade human beings by attaching themselves to food if it was never sacrificed to the gods prior to its consumption. Paul embarks on a journey of enlightening the believers on the do’s and don’ts for conscience sake.
A conscience must be educated, as an uneducated conscience can make a wrong decision. An individual can educate their conscience through prayer, scripture and experience. Indeed, the scriptures state that even those who do not have faith to follow still have their conscience (Romans 2:14-15).
Nothing ought to be judged solely from the point of view of knowledge; everything ought to be judged from the point of view of love. The argument of the advanced Corinthians was that they knew better than to regard an idol as anything. Their knowledge had taken them far past that. There is always a certain danger in knowledge. It tends to make a man arrogant and feel superior and look down unsympathetically on the man who is not as far advanced as himself. Knowledge which does that is not true knowledge.
