Question(s) for Reflection
• Q 7: What truth is God revealing to me in this passage?
Vs.25-28. Paul’s reasons for singleness: Paul continues to expound the principle to remain in the state in which one was called again maintaining it is not wrong to marry (v.28a). Why does he want the unmarried to remain single (vs.26,28b-29)? “The present crisis” (v.26) is probably a reference to the pressures of the Christian life in an immoral and particularly hostile environment.
Vs.29-35. Serving the Lord with undivided devotion: “The time is short” (v.29) could mean Paul was expecting the Lord’s return at any time. He, therefore, maintained that in whatever state we find ourselves, we are to serve the Lord with undivided attention. In vs.29-31, note what this means for different people. How could one’s marriage stand in the way of one’s devotion to the Lord (vs.32-35)?
Vs.36-40. Engaged couples and widows: In Corinth, there were people who had the view that if a man was spiritual, it was all right to be engaged but not to marry his fiancée. Paul sought to free such people from feeling guilty if they choose to marry, but notice the admonition in v.9. This is good counsel which ever holds true. Notice the condition attached to a widow’s remarriage (vs.39-40). A Christian must always marry another Christian.
