
2025 Maiden Edition of Orphanage Games Thrills Yenagoa Community
The maiden edition of the 2025 Orphanage Games held at the Samson Siasia Sports Complex, Yenagoa, has been widely applauded by participants, caregivers, dignitaries, and members of the public.
The event brought together children from orphanage homes across Bayelsa State, offering a vibrant display of talent, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Participants engaged in various activities, including track and field events, sack races, and other fun games aimed at building confidence, unity, and inclusion.
Speaking at the event, the Bayelsa State Commissioner for Sports Development, Dr. Daniel Igali—represented by the Director of Sports Development, Mr. Michael Alakere—commended the initiative led by Datom Kio Lawson Development Limited (DKL). He described the Games as a platform that provides children in orphanages with equal opportunities to participate in sports development. Igali emphasized the importance of government involvement in nurturing young talents regardless of their background.
Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Women, Children Affairs, Empowerment and Social Development, Mrs. Agnes Oloye, highlighted the role of sports in enhancing children’s physical and emotional wellbeing. She praised the organisers for prioritizing the welfare and happiness of vulnerable children through such impactful events. Oloye added that although the Orphanage Games is a private initiative, it aligns with the state government’s commitment to child protection, empowerment, and social inclusion. She called for sustained partnerships to ensure the continuity of the program.
The founder of Let the Children Come Foundation (LTCC), Mary Jane Olisa, reiterated that every child deserves love, support, and the opportunity to shine. She encouraged the public to give, noting that even small contributions can make a significant difference.
Caregivers and children expressed joy and gratitude, describing the event as inspiring, exciting, and memorable.
Medals, donations, and consolation prizes were presented to outstanding participants, while all children received refreshments and words of encouragement. The atmosphere remained lively and emotional as the Games concluded.
