A Historic Presidential Visit to Bayelsa: A Call to Unity, Respect, and Civic Pride
By Professor Steve Azaiki – The forthcoming visit of Bola Ahmed Tinubu,GCFR to Yenagoa, Bayelsa State marks a truly historic moment—his first official visit to the state since assuming office as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. This visit is not just ceremonial; it is symbolic, significant, and deserving of reflection and collective responsibility.
Bayelsa is not just another state in the federation. It is a land richly endowed with vast reserves of crude oil and gas—resources that form a critical backbone of Nigeria’s economy. It is also the revered homeland of Isaac Adaka Boro, whose legacy of advocacy and sacrifice remains etched in our national consciousness.
Since President Tinubu assumed office, there are emerging signs—gradual but noteworthy—of renewed hope. The establishment of a Federal University of Agriculture in Nembe, alongside the Federal Government’s support for the Nembe–Brass Road project, initiated by Governor Douye Diri, are commendable developments. Furthermore, there is, for the first time in years, a genuine sense that the long-awaited East-West Road may finally reach completion.
Let it be clearly stated: this is not an exercise in public relations or political praise. It is a sincere acknowledgment of progress where it is evident.
However, the purpose of this message goes beyond policy and projects. It is a heartfelt appeal to the great and hospitable people of Bayelsa.
We are a people known for our warmth, our dignity, and our deep sense of community. At moments such as this, we must rise above our differences—political, personal, or otherwise—and embrace the higher calling of unity and patriotism. The President is not merely an individual; he embodies the sovereignty and authority of our nation. To honor him is to honor Nigeria.
As someone deeply rooted in this land, I make this appeal with a strong sense of identity and responsibility. I was born in Yenagoa, the capital city and the heart of our state. I am proudly from Atissa Kingdom—the host of this capital. Over the years, I have had the privilege of serving Bayelsa in various capacities: as a Pioneer Commissioner, Secretary to the State Government, and Pro-Chancellor of Niger Delta University, among others. These roles have only deepened my commitment to the progress and unity of our people.
Bayelsa occupies a unique and strategic position in Nigeria—it is, in many respects, the lifewire of the nation’s economic engine. This reality places a responsibility on us to act with maturity, foresight, and patriotism.
Therefore, I call on all sons and daughters of Bayelsa to come out in their numbers on Friday, April 10, to warmly receive President Tinubu as he visits Yenagoa to commission key projects, including the gas turbine. Let us demonstrate the true spirit of Bayelsa—peaceful, welcoming, and united.
Our opinions about the President or his administration may differ—and rightly so in a democracy—but our duty as citizens remains constant: to respect and honor the office of the President.
Let us rise to the occasion. Let us show Nigeria and the world the character of Bayelsa.
Welcome to Yenagoa, Mr. President.
