Every 27th September is celebrated globally as World Tourism Day — a time for tourists and stakeholders to spotlight challenges and showcase the diversity of tourism products across destinations.
In Yenagoa, the capital of Bayelsa State, the activities marking the day were low-key. Yet, Macaulay Eteli, in collaboration with the Association of Tourism Practitioners of Nigeria (ATPN), organized an inspiring arts exhibition that brought together visual artists, art lovers, and policymakers to experience captivating art pieces reflecting culture, lifestyle, and glamour.
Stepping into the Macaulay Eteli Arts Gallery is an immersion into hope and resilience. The ambience of the studio radiates intentionality and brilliance, greeting first-time visitors with warmth and creativity from the moment the doors open.
The gallery is the brainchild of Macaulay Eteli — a civil engineer by training but an artist at heart from Ogbia Local Government Area. Eteli is an internationally recognized artist and art collector whose works have been showcased across the globe.
Speaking with an elated Eteli, one senses the pride of an artist placing his homeland on the world map. He shares glimpses of his artistic journey, the blessings of creative expression, and his dream of building a world-class arts gallery in Bayelsa State.
With a charming smile, Eteli personally guides guests through his world of creativity, immersing them in the depth of his art. His accent may hint at distance, yet he is quick to affirm that his art keeps him rooted to home.
From securing government approval for the establishment of MEA Gallery in April 2022 to exhibiting his works in The Visual Arts — a Canadian Heritage Collection — Eteli’s space stands as a testament to passion, perseverance, and creativity.
Beautifully curated, the gallery features an impressive collection of his works on canvas, evocative paintings, and highlights from his artistic journey.
In a city with few art galleries, MEA Gallery stands out, positioned to meet international standards and deliver a memorable visitor experience. With open green lawns and spaces for grooming emerging artists, the gallery’s serene environment harmonizes nature’s elements with creative design.
This year’s theme, “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation,” is particularly apt. For MEA Gallery, the tourism potential of Bayelsa State can indeed drive sustainable transformation — a fact already evident in its impact.
Strategically located at the heart of economic and social activities in Yenagoa, the gallery has become a hub for artistic expression, sustaining the growing art sector while nurturing younger artists.
A visit to Macaulay Eteli Arts Gallery is a journey into cultural creativity and design. MEA Gallery offers a tapestry of colors that stir emotion and reflection — until you find yourself within the art.
