Amaechi Reveals Tough Conversation With Buhari, Says Former President Was Overwhelmed by Age
By Our Correspondent – Former Minister of Transportation and ex-Governor of Rivers State, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, has opened up on a difficult conversation he once had with former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing the late Nigerian leader as a man who became overwhelmed by the burden of age and the demands of governance.
Amaechi made the revelation while reflecting on his relationship with Buhari and the challenges that confronted the former president during his time in office.
According to Amaechi, there came a point when he had to engage Buhari in a frank and uncomfortable discussion regarding the realities of leadership and the limitations imposed by advancing age. He noted that despite Buhari’s patriotism and commitment to the country, the pressures of managing a complex nation like Nigeria became increasingly difficult.
“The poor man was overwhelmed because of age,” Amaechi reportedly stated, adding that his observations were not intended as criticism but as an honest assessment of the enormous responsibilities Buhari carried while in office.
The former minister explained that the conversation was one of the toughest he ever had with the ex-president, as it required him to speak candidly about issues many people around Buhari were unwilling to address. He said the former president listened attentively, demonstrating humility and a willingness to hear differing perspectives despite the sensitivity of the subject.
Amaechi further remarked that leadership at the highest level requires not only experience and determination but also the physical and mental stamina necessary to cope with the constant pressures of governance. He suggested that age can significantly affect a leader’s capacity to respond to the demands of office, particularly in a country facing multifaceted security, economic, and political challenges.
The former Rivers governor maintained that Buhari remained committed to the Nigerian project throughout his tenure and did his best under the circumstances. However, he stressed that future political leaders must recognize the importance of health, energy, and capacity when seeking elective office.
His remarks have since sparked discussions among political observers and citizens, with many interpreting the comments as a rare insider account of the realities within the Buhari administration.
Amaechi, who served as one of Buhari’s closest political allies and cabinet members, remains a prominent voice in Nigeria’s political landscape. His reflections have added a new dimension to ongoing debates about leadership, age, and governance in Africa’s most populous nation.
Political analysts say the comments may reignite conversations about the suitability of elderly politicians for demanding executive positions and the need for political parties to place greater emphasis on competence, capacity, and generational renewal in leadership recruitment.
