Bayelsa Set to Commission Power Plant, Landmark Bridge, and Key Road Infrastructure
The Bayelsa State Government has announced plans to inaugurate major infrastructure projects this April, including its long-anticipated independent power plant, a 630-metre bridge, and a newly constructed dual carriage road, in a move aimed at boosting economic growth and connectivity.
Governor Douye Diri disclosed the development on Tuesday during the March edition of the monthly Praise Night held at the King of Glory Chapel, Government House, Yenagoa. He revealed that the 60-megawatt gas-fired turbine power plant located in Elebele community, Ogbia Local Government Area, is nearing completion and will undergo a test run ahead of its official inauguration by President Bola Tinubu.

According to the governor, the power project, now at 99 percent completion, represents a significant milestone in addressing the state’s long-standing electricity challenges. He noted that once operational, the facility would exceed the current supply from the national grid, which stands at about 24 megawatts, and would stimulate industrial growth and small business development.
Diri emphasized that electricity consumption in the state would be based on a pay-as-you-go metering system to ensure transparency and prevent overbilling. He urged residents to remain patient, assuring that the project would soon deliver stable power supply across the state.
In addition to the power project, the governor confirmed that the 630-metre Angiama-Oporoma Bridge across the River Nun in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area is ready for commissioning. He described the bridge as the longest in the state and a critical component of the ongoing road project linking communities to Agge.
The bridge project, which began during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, had its groundbreaking ceremony performed by former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.
Also slated for inauguration is a dual carriageway connecting the New Yenagoa City to the NLNG Road at Obunagha, designed to serve as an alternative route to the busy Yenagoa-Mbiama Road. The governor further disclosed that the first phase of the Nembe-Brass Road project is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
Diri called on political actors in the state to maintain peace and civility as political activities intensify nationwide, stressing the importance of unity and responsible conduct regardless of party affiliations.
Delivering a sermon at the event, Chaplain of the Bayelsa Medical University, Prof. Steven Olali, urged residents to cultivate a lifestyle of gratitude, encouraging them to praise God in all circumstances while remaining steadfast in faith.
The upcoming commissioning of these projects marks a significant step in the state’s infrastructure development drive, with expectations high that they will enhance economic activities and improve the quality of life for residents.
