Breast Cancer is preventable, Says Bayelsa First Lady, Gloria Diri
‘The fact that most cancers are treatable means early detection is key to surviving breast cancer disease. It is in recognition of this very important fact that Awareness Creation and Sensitization on Early Detection and adequate information is anchored on.
The Wife of the Governor, Dr.Mrs Gloria Diri stated this during the program marking the OCTOBER BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH at the Banquet Hall Government House,Yenagoa.
The programm was organized by the State Ministry of Health in collaboration with the office of the First Lady of Bayelsa State and the Nigerian Medical Association NMA.
According to Dr. Diri,no woman should die of Breast Cancer as precautionary measures such as daily Self examination,Regular Medical Checks,Mammogram and Breast Scan for at least once a year for Women above 40 years can stem Breast Cancer disease.
She Added that,the Pink Campaign Against Breast Cancer will be taken to the rural communities to reduce the number of Premature and avoidable deaths in Women and Girls arising from Breast Cancer in Bayelsa State.
Speaking on the 2020 theme “Early Detection Can Save Lives, The Consultant Obstetrician Dr. Nuvie Oyeyemi disclosed that apart from Breast Cancer,Cervical Cancer accounts for the second leading cause of death in Women.
She explained that early detection remains the best option available, adding that Women should endeavor to Self Examine and seek medical attention on time.
Earlier in his Welcome address, the Commissioner of Health, Dr. Pabara Pabara Newton Igwele, disclosed that the South South region in the country ranks high in breast cancer patients which calls for urgent intervention.
He expressed optimism that the partnership between the Ministry of Health and the office of the First Lady, will provide the needed results and support for patients and survivors.
The event was attended by the Chief Whip Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Hon. Ebiowu Koku Obiyai, the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Health, Dr. Inodu Apoku, Medical Practioners, PDP BOT member, Mrs Remi Kuku, Female Commissioners, Wives of legislators and top Government Functionaries,Women groups and Women from all walks of life.
