PREAMBLE:

Language is a powerful tool used for effective communication and interaction. In this dispensation, indigenous languages and cultures are going into extinction because of western civilization across the globe. Especially in Africa, we have abandoned our indigenous practice and replaced it with borrowed ideas particularly in the area of communication.

This book authored by one of our own is timely and serve as succor at this critical moment. The author intention is to intercept those western practices and belief systems which has eventually eroded our traditional belief and practice. The book will serve as a tool to preserve our indigenous languages and culture. It is imperative to note that language is the best meal we can give to our children at the early stage of their life.

Just like Tua-Tua Kpa Khana and others written on the above subject matter, this book is unique as its tailored to help beginners develop a standardized language and writing skill particularly in Khana language. Experience has shown that people can easily speak a language but reducing it into paper has always been a difficult task, and that is the essence of this book. With this book, we can know names of items, objects etc in Khana language. Our children can now do their numerical calculation perfectly with the aid of this book. Just few days ago, the Nigeria House of Representative proposed a bill for the teaching of mathematics using Yoruba language in secondary school.

The book with 21 modules or chapters is uniquely arranged in accordance with the known part of speech for a better understanding by pupil and beginners. It is populated with images and graphics which differentiate it from others. These images and graphics cited in this book will help pupils identify and memories them anywhere they are found.

Khana language is unique with it “tone marks” and they are very important in both writing and spoken words. The function of tone and marks is to enable ready identify objects, numbers and names in Khana language according to the way they are pronounce. It is noteworthy, that the comprehensive Khana language textbook for Nursery and Primary school presented here today is not a translation of any English textbook.

Going through the work, you will see special practical work imputed by the author to enhance the understanding by pupil and beginners in Khana language. The work also contains common names and their unique meaning in Khana language. Although the author did not capture my own name “Barisuka and Beteh, meaning God take all the honor and My father’s house.

The work is rich and helpful to beginners and our children particularly to those in the city. My children have started practicing some basic practical in the book.

I want to encourage the author to do well to extend the scope of the work to our Gokana, Eleme and Tai segments of Ogoni. I am also using this medium to call on the chairman of Khana local government area to ensure the implementation of this book in our school curriculum.

Gbene Ogoni… ….
