Dr. Yusuf JS, Senior Pastor of the Touch for Recovery Outreach International, TROI, Abuja has described the recent donations made by some individuals and corporate organizations to the Federal government in respect of Covid-19 pandemic in Nigeria as a waste of resource saying it will end in the pockets of top government officials.

Speaking with journalists at his office in Abuja, Dr. Yusuf JS expressed worry over the proper use of the cash donations by the federal government to cushion the effect of the lockdown on Nigerians in these challenging times owing to fact that the government has been a bad manager of financial resources.

The clergyman said, giving any kind of donation to the federal government or any tier of government is like pouring water into an ocean saying that there has never been a time any government in Nigeria had given a proper account on how such donations are disbursed and persons who received what.

He said, “Giving donation to the federal or any state government is like pouring water into an ocean that will not been seen. These individuals and corporate organizations are not strangers to how government is been run in this country; therefore donating money to them is for me, a waste of resources and prolonged suffering for Nigerians in this lockdown era.

“I can imagine a bank that has customers with their account details cannot reach out to them by transferring such donations to their account but prefers to give it to government that cannot manage themselves. The banks have opportunity to go down to a locality within their premises to make the donations to ordinary Nigerians which is more rewarding than give it to a government that will not account because it will end up in the pockets of top government officials.

“Now, see how the Federal government is managing funds meant for ordinary Nigerians as pallative measures during the stay-at-home order by the government. Already, we hear different figures in trillions of naira flying in the media and suddenly, there is fire outbreak in the office of the Accountant General of Federation, don’t you smell the rat?”, he asked.

He lamented there is nothing to show that the government means well for the people in such a time as this pointing out that if the kind of donations people and corporate individuals are making are made to the church, the tears of many will be wiped.

Dr. Yusuf said he has spent his personal money to purchase and distribute preventive kits to security individuals in the FCT as well as food items for various households calling on public spirited individuals to rather make donations to churches and non-governmental organizations that will take it directly to communities than government.
