Daily Bible Verse for Thursday 1st August 2024 – Psalms 15:1
The longing of every believer should be to stay in the presence of God daily. Here, the Psalmist asks to know who is the person qualify to stay in God’s presence. The verse appears as a dialogue between a desperate man and God.
It is expedient to have a full grasp of the meaning of the word ‘tabernacle’ and secondly the phrase ‘holy hill’. Also the use of the words ‘dwell’ and ‘abide’.
Literally, a tabernacle, in the Jewish culture, is a small place of worship that could be moved. It’s origin can be traced to the ancient times, when the Israelites traveled in the desert. While, the phrase ‘holy hill’ talks of a location and implies the dwelling place of God; thus, the question, where is the ‘holy hill’? God does not dwell on mountains or hills but in our hearts.
The use of the words ‘dwell’ and ‘abide’ is a ‘staying place’ of a person. Someone being accomodate in another person’s residence. A tenant pays a houseowner to stay in his house for a period of time.
The tabernacle signifies a place of worship and holy hill points us to God’s presence in a man’s heart as a location that is movable. In John 4:21-24, Jesus gives us a better understanding on symbolism of the tabernacle and holy hill. There is a price to pay to stay in God’s presence.
There are examples of men in the bible that encountered God on mountains; Moses meets God on Mount Sinai where he recieves the commandments in Exodus 19 and on the Mount of Transfiguration, Elijah and Moses appears to Jesus and three other disciples in Mark 9:2-13.
These are descriptive terms used to aid our spiritual understanding of God’s word. Tabernacle as a place of worship plays a critical role in the life of a believer; men encounter God in the place of worship when they climb the hill in holiness of heart. Our calling as believers is a holy call.
If Moses and Jesus are hill climbers with visible results of their experience, than every believer must be ready to climb a hill and desire to abide and dwell there.
Today’s bible verse is the search for the man that has the qualities to stay in God’s presence to enjoy daily supertural encounters for exploits. Therefore, the Psalmist ask, who is that man willing to worship God in His presence daily?
