FURIBS Marks First Anniversary with Induction of Chiefs, Elders in Grand Ceremony
The Federated Union of Rivers Indigenes in Bayelsa State (FURIBS) added another milestone to its record on Sunday as it formally inducted its Chiefs and Elders into the Rivers Community Council of Chiefs and Elders. The colorful ceremony, held at the Model Primary School, Biogbolo in Yenagoa, attracted dignitaries from various sectors who gathered to witness the historic occasion.
The event also doubled as the first anniversary celebration of the New Era Administration led by Chief Barisuka Prince Beteh, the President of FURIBS. In his welcome address, Chief Beteh expressed gratitude to the members and leaders of the community for their unflinching support throughout the last one year. He highlighted the strides recorded under his leadership, describing the journey as one anchored on unity, cultural preservation and service to Rivers indigenes residing in Bayelsa State.
One of the key highlights of the day was a thought-provoking lecture delivered by eminent scholar, Professor Ambily Etekpe, a renowned Political Scientist and Development Expert. Speaking on the topic “The Niger Delta Struggle: Yesterday, Today and the Task Ahead,” Prof. Etekpe shed light on the historical dynamics that shaped the agitation for equity and justice in the region. He urged sociopolitical and cultural organizations like FURIBS to remain steadfast in championing the rights of the people while adopting modern leadership approaches that promote growth, participation and accountability.
Prof. Etekpe also charged the New Era Administration to stay focused on its vision and continually deploy the right leadership strategies needed to strengthen the union’s structure and influence.
The induction of the Chiefs and Elders was conducted with rich cultural displays and traditional recognitions, signifying their crucial role as custodians of heritage and advisers in the affairs of the Rivers community in Bayelsa.
The lively celebration featured music, traditional performances and hearty expressions of unity, as members commemorated a year of progress and looked forward to greater accomplishments under the New Era banner.
