A Civil Society and Human Rights group under the aegis of Civil Rights Council (CRC), Bayelsa State chapter has foiled an attempt by a mobile police inspector, Sunday Ideh under the Bayelsa State Police Command to kill his wife, Akpesi Ideh and son.
Narrating the incidence to newsmen in Yenagoa during the meeting of the CRC, the chairman of the group, Princess Elizabeth Egbe said her group got an intelligent report about a gender based violence, involving the police man who made an attempt to take the lives of his wife and 9 years old son and quickly waded into the matter to save thier lives.
Princess Elizabeth Egbe further said that the intelligent report revealed that the Police Inspector had been caught on two occasions when he locked up the wife and the son in one of the rooms in thier apartment and lighted thier cooking gas which could have suffocated them if not for the timely intervention of CRC.
She also said that Sunday Ideh had threatened to kill them and himself if they try to call the attention of any government agency, officials or individuals which informed the reason why her group immediately alerted the Nigerian Police Force about the incidence and the man was detained at the Police headquarters in Yenagoa, reiterating that one of the primary responsibilities of CRC is to protect the vulnerable and indigent people in the society against gender based violence.
The CRC Chairman expressed appreciation to the State’s Commissioner of Police, CP Francis Idu for receiving them and ensuring that the lives of the lives of the Police Inspector’s family were protected.
According to her, gender based violence is on the increase in the country which necessitated thier actions at reducing gender based violence to the bearest minimum, stressing that all governmental institutions and other relevant stakeholders must use all means at thier disposal to accelerate the action.
Responding to the incidence, CP Francis Idu the constitutional duty of the Nigerian Police Force is the protection of lives and property of the citizens which was what the police did by receiving members of CRC and took prompt action at saving the lives of the Police Inspector’s family, noting that the matter is being resolved as it’s a family affair.
