INEC Chairman Professor Mahmood Yakubu Concludes Tenure
Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has officially concluded his second tenure after ten years of dedicated service to Nigeria’s electoral system.
The event marks the end of a significant era in the nation’s democratic journey, with Yakubu handing over the leadership baton to INEC National Commissioner, Mrs. May Agbamuche Mbu, who will now serve as Acting Chairman pending the appointment of a new substantive head by the President.
The brief but symbolic handover ceremony took place during a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) at the INEC headquarters in Abuja. Prof. Yakubu, who first assumed office in November 2015, became the first INEC Chairman to complete two full terms, having been reappointed in 2020.
His tenure witnessed several landmark electoral reforms, including the introduction of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV), both of which enhanced transparency and credibility in the country’s electoral process.
In his valedictory remarks, Prof. Yakubu expressed gratitude to Nigerians, INEC staff, and development partners for their unwavering support throughout his tenure.
He urged the commission to continue upholding the principles of independence, transparency, and innovation in conducting elections.
Taking over as acting chairman, May Agbamuche Mbu pledged her commitment to sustaining the progress made under Yakubu’s leadership while ensuring the commission maintains neutrality and integrity in all electoral activities.
The conclusion of Prof. Mahmood Yakubu’s tenure at INEC signals a period of transition and reflection for Nigeria’s electoral body as the nation awaits the appointment of a new chairman to steer its next phase of democratic consolidation.
