Measles-Rubella: Bayelsa Launches Comprehensive Vaccination Campaign, Stakeholders Pledges
Eunice Nnachi, Yenagoa
In a significant move to bolster healthcare in Nigeria, the Bayelsa State Ministry of Health and the Primary Health Care Board, in collaboration with the Office of the First Lady, Dr. Gloria Diri, have launched a comprehensive measles-rubella vaccination campaign. This initiative, held at Peace Park in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, underscores the importance of immunization in preventing life-threatening diseases.
Dr. Diri emphasized the critical role of the measles-rubella vaccine in protecting children from severe complications associated with these diseases. Measles can lead to convulsions, blindness, brain damage, and even death, while rubella can cause miscarriages, stillbirths, and birth defects in unborn babies. The vaccine effectively stimulates the body’s immune system to produce protection against these viruses.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Brisibe Seiyefa, highlighted the campaign’s potential to prevent deaths and avert over 2.5 million abnormalities that could affect three million children nationwide. He described the measles-rubella vaccine as a vital booster that enhances public health by strengthening immunity.
Representing the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr. Okeke Edulard reiterated that vaccination is a crucial tool in combating child mortality. The vaccine not only protects individual children but also contributes to community immunity, emphasizing immunization as a fundamental right of every child.
In a remarkable display of solidarity, numerous organizations and women’s groups have pledged to support the Ministry of Health through advocacy. Key organizations include the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), Core Group on Women and Girls’ Health (C-WINS), WHO, United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), Christian Medical Services (CMS), Gloria Diri Foundation (GDF), Eunice Nnachi Women Advocacy Foundation (ENWAF), Women Organized for Mentorship and Advocacy Network (WOMAN), Nigerian Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), and Women’s Wing of the Christian Association of Nigeria (WOWICAN).
These organizations are collaborating with the Ministry of Health to advocate for improved healthcare services, policies, and programs. Their collective efforts focus on promoting health awareness, education, and community engagement, ultimately contributing to better health outcomes for all.
Effective advocacy involves engaging key stakeholders, including policymakers, media, civil society organizations, and influential individuals. Strategies include organizing workshops, symposiums, town hall meetings, press conferences, and demonstrations to raise awareness and influence policy decisions.
The collective efforts of these stakeholders demonstrate a strong commitment to improving healthcare outcomes in Nigeria. Through advocacy and collaborative initiatives like the measles-rubella vaccination campaign, they aim to ensure that all Nigerians have access to quality healthcare services without financial hardship, aligning with the broader goal of achieving Universal Health Coverage by 2030.
Despite these efforts, challenges persist. Low vaccination coverage remains a significant issue, as seen in recent measles outbreaks across Nigeria. Stakeholders have emphasized the need for intensified and extended vaccination campaigns, particularly in grassroots communities, to achieve the 95% coverage required for herd immunity 2.
The Bayelsa State experience highlights the importance of targeted vaccination campaigns. Despite an 86% vaccination coverage in the November 2021 measles campaign, the state recorded 14 measles outbreaks in 20221. This underscores the need for continuous monitoring and improvement in immunization strategies.
The launch of the measles-rubella vaccination campaign in Bayelsa State marks a significant step towards enhancing healthcare in Nigeria. With the support of diverse stakeholders, the campaign not only aims to protect children from measles and rubella but also contributes to broader healthcare development goals. Through collective advocacy and strategic initiatives, Nigeria moves closer to achieving Universal Health Coverage, ensuring that quality healthcare is accessible to all without financial hardship.
