MTN Nigeria CEO: Unlimited Data Bundles Are Not Sustainable Under Current Network Realities
By Our Correspondent – The Chief Executive Officer of MTN Nigeria, Karl Toriola, has stated that unlimited data plans on mobile networks are largely impractical under present global telecom infrastructure, arguing that no country in the world truly offers unlimited mobile data at affordable rates without significant trade-offs in quality or cost.
Toriola made the remarks while speaking on the challenges of network capacity, spectrum allocation, and the growing demand for high-speed internet services across Nigeria and other developing markets.
According to him, the idea of “unlimited data” is often misunderstood by consumers, as every telecom operator operates within finite infrastructure limits. He explained that offering truly unlimited access to all users simultaneously would require network capacity far beyond what is economically or technically feasible.
“The issue of unlimited data on mobile networks: it doesn’t exist anywhere in the world except if you’re paying a fortune. There’s a limit because you can never build enough capacity for everyone to be on an unlimited bundle, and you think you’ll provide a quality of service that is decent,” Toriola said.
He noted that mobile networks are built on shared resources, meaning that heavy usage by some subscribers inevitably affects service quality for others. This, he said, is why telecom operators typically design fair usage policies even on so-called “unlimited” packages.
Industry analysts say the remarks highlight a long-standing tension in Nigeria’s telecom sector, where consumers increasingly demand affordable high-volume data access amid rising dependence on digital services, remote work, streaming platforms, and social media.
Toriola’s comments also come at a time when Nigerian subscribers have repeatedly raised concerns about data depletion rates and inconsistent network performance, particularly during peak usage hours.
Despite these challenges, the MTN Nigeria chief emphasized that operators continue to invest heavily in network expansion, fiber deployment, and 5G rollout to improve capacity and user experience.
He further urged customers to better understand how mobile networks function, stressing that sustainable pricing and service quality depend on balancing affordability with the realities of infrastructure investment.
As data consumption continues to rise across Africa’s largest telecom market, the debate over what constitutes “fair” and “unlimited” internet access is expected to remain a central issue between regulators, operators, and consumers.
