National Library Celebrates 60th Anniversary in Bayelsa
The National Library of Nigeria, NLN is currently celebrating its 60th anniversary with the theme “The future of libraries in a digital age.
Established in 1964, the library has grown in Nigeria with many branches spread across various states in the country.
Head of Branch, Bayelsa State, Mr Nwabueze Nwoko who spoke on the theme noted that the National Library has began the digitalization of its materials to meet up with international standards.
“The library is a growing organism so it is important to talk about digitalization. The traditional library will one day phase out and it is difficult to maintain materials in hardcopies”
Mr Nwoko equally pointed out that the National Library has some unique functions such as the Issuance of the International Standard Book Number, ISBN and the International Standard Serial Number, ISSN for those who want to publish magazines, books and other materials.
“The National Library as the apex library also helps in the development of other libraries in the country. We also organize seminars for publishers, authors and other relevant stakeholders”
Speaking on the 2024 Readership Promotion Campaign, RPC, Mr Nwoko said the NLN visited the hard to reach Community to sensitize the people on the need to read as well as to establish a literacy centre.
The Readership Promotion Campaign had four schools in the state participate in a reading competition, Impromptu Speeches and DEARS-Drop Everything and Read for Somebody was observed.
At the end of the competition, prizes were presented to winners, good will messages were delivered and each student went home with books.
