NLC Warns FG Against Increase in Electricity Traffic

The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC warns the Federal government, FG saying it would not hesitate to use industrial mechanisms if the speculation of an increase in electricity tariff becomes a reality.

A statement from the NLC President, Comrade Ayuba Wabba said if it is true that government is making plans to grant approval to electricity distribution companies to increase tariff, labour would be left with no option than to deploy industrial mechanisms granted in Nigeria’s law for the defence of workers right.

The current electricity tariff charges for residential areas in Abuja and Lagos ranges from 36-47.09 naira per kilowatt.

You would recall that the federal government had increased electricity tariff in January 2021after complains from electricity distribution companies that low tariff was affecting their businesses.

However, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC is about to grant fresh approval for increase in tariff by commencing the processes of the minor review of the Multi Year Tariff Order, MYTO 2020.

According to the report, NERC says the review is to consider changes in inflation, foreign exchange, gas prices and available generation capacity.

Currently, there is a pending negotiation between the government and organized labour over modalities to ensure that the electricity tariff is acceptable to both parties.
