On Tinubu’s 74th birthday, PC-NCG highlights Coast Guard’s vital role in securing Nigeria’s waters and driving blue economy growth
The Provisionary Committee for the proposed Nigerian Coast Guard, PC-NCG has acknowledged the fact that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda emphasizes the importance of a secure maritime and stable environment for economic growth, making the establishment of the Nigerian Coast Guard a pressing national priority.
In a statement issued by the Director of Communications & Public Affairs, Dr. Piriye Kiyaramo on Sunday in Abuja, the Chief Executive and Accounting Officer of PC-NCG, Captain Noah Ichaba, while congratulating the President on his 74th birthday, reiterated the urgent need for the establishment of the Nigerian Coast Guard.
“As we celebrate President Tinubu’s 74th birthday, the PC-NCG aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda, prioritizing maritime law enforcement, safety, and security for economic growth and national development. Establishing the Nigerian Coast Guard is a key step towards securing our waters and boosting the blue economy as well as boosting our international standing.
“Regarding the Nigerian Coast Guard, there’s an urgent need for its establishment to address security challenges and boost the blue economy. The Coast Guard would enhance maritime security and safety, combat piracy, oil theft, and illegal fishing, support economic growth, and job creation
“PC-NCG uses this auspicious occasion of the 74th birthday of our proactive president to further urge the Federal Government and relevant stakeholders to cease wasting time, resources and energy on repetitive actions that lead back to the same point without making the desired progress.
“Recall that in December 2025, the nation witnessed the submission of reports and recommendations to the Presidency by participants of Senior Executive Course 47 of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, NIPSS, who were earlier mandated by Mr. President to research the theme: “Blue Economy and Sustainable Development in Nigeria: Issues, Challenges, and Opportunities.
“The President’s directive reflects a national commitment to reposition Nigeria’s maritime and hydrological endowments as engines of inclusive growth, environmental renewal, and long-term prosperity. The study by the participants provided evidence-based insights to guide the implementation of National Policy on Marine and Blue Economy 2025 and related frameworks.
“It demonstrated how a sustainability-centered blue economy could unify economic diversification, environmental stewardship, and social transformation across Nigeria’s coastal and inland water bodies.
“Prior to the above, the Federal Government, at various intervals, had made efforts at addressing spotted weaknesses in the marine and blue economy through various initiatives.
“The National Integrated Infrastructure Master Plan (NIIMP) (2020), the Deep Blue Project (2021), the National Maritime Transport Policy (2022), establishment of the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy (FMMBE) in 2023 and the adoption of the National Policy on Marine and Blue Economy (NPMBE) in 2025 recorded a milestone.
“These efforts were geared toward enhancing maritime security, maritime safety, maritime trade and port efficiency, in line with the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda – for improved economic diversification.
“PC-NCG is glad to note that, in agreement with it’s irrefutable perspectives on appropriate governance agency that will be responsible for enforcement of maritime laws, reviews, harmonization, implementation, collaboration and recommendation, the Senior Executive Course 47 participants through their recommendations made a strong point that “without a unifying sustainability lens that integrates stewardship and innovation, the nation will still be at odds with reality.
“Going by those patriotic submissions, and the various recommendations made by SEC 47 for implementation by relevant MDAS, PC-NCG respectfully wishes to further urge the Federal Government and concerned parties to act promptly while the need is acute and the door of opportunity is wide open by establishing the proposed Nigerian Coast Guard, so as to avoid unintended trap of working in the same circle.
“This is the most advantageous way to focus on taking direct action to solve the real problem, which MDAs are recommended to bear the burden, for now, because of the absence of Coast Guard Agency.
“Official nod for the Nigerian Coast Guard to commence operation will be the crowning glory or the culminating masterpiece of all the efforts and initiatives of the Federal Government regarding the nation’s marine and blue economy space, thereby making all previous struggles worthwhile as it will stand out as the best decision that will ever cement the envisaged successes,” Captain Ichaba emphasized.
