
Orphanage Owners Advised to Improve Their Skills in Bayelsa
Owners of Orphanages and Care Centres in Bayelsa State have been advised to improve their skills inorder to effectively take care of the needs of children in their custody.
Permanent Secretary Ministry of Women, Children Affairs, Empowerment and Social Development, Agnes Oloye gave the advice during a 2 day training of matrons and managers of Orphanages in the State held on the 4th of June, 2025 at the Conference Hall in the Ministry of Women Affairs with the theme: Building Capacity for Orphanages and Care Centres.
Madam Oloye noted that children must not be neglected but given top priority in the home to enable them feel safe adding that they must also be given quality education as they represent the future of a better society.
She expressed gratitude to the state governor, Senator Douye Diri for the laudable initiative in training caregivers as well as the welfare of children in the state.
Meanwhile, the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Trade, Dr. Azebi Oluwatoyin admonished participants at the training to strictly follow the prescriptions when giving drugs to the children in their homes.
Dr Azebi pointed out that they should study and understand the medical history of every child within their care and seek advice from experts to ensure that the children are always healthy.
She advised parents and care givers to be intentional about the upbringing of the children in their custody as every child needs
the right environment for their overall growth and development.
On her part, Deputy Director, Head of Gender Base Violence, Barr Pere Egbuson enjoined participants to ensure every child is given equal rights and opportunity in the home.
adding that the children should be closely monitored to avoid any form of sexual harassment.
Director of Child Development in the ministry, Mr Panebi Jacob called on the owners of orphanages to implore best practices and be conversant with the Child Right Law as provided in the constitution.
Also speaking, Mr Ballantyne Naibi, Desk Officer, Ministry of Women Affairs stressed the need for every manager of an orphanage to know the HIV status of the children within their care inorder to avoid the spread of the disease.
Mr Naibi added that care givers should ensure maximum security to prevent major occurrences of injury in the home especially for the children with special needs.
Highpoint of the 2 day training is the issuance of certificate to the owners of orphanage homes in the State.
