Rivers Culture Takes Center Stage at NURSS Cultural Day in FUO
The rich heritage of Rivers State came alive in vibrant colors, cultural displays, and traditional delicacies as the Federated Union of Rivers Indigenes in Bayelsa State (FURIBS) joined the National Union of Rivers State Students (NURSS), Federal University Otuoke (FUO), for a grand Cultural Day celebration, a highlight of the 2025 NURSS Week.
Held at the Dame Patience Square, Otuoke, the event was a melting pot of tradition and youthful energy. From colorful attires adorned with coral beads to captivating dances and indigenous sounds, the event showcased the depth and beauty of Rivers State’s cultural tapestry.
Leading the FURIBS delegation was Chief Barisuka Prince Beteh, President of the Union, who lauded the students for keeping the spirit of their heritage alive even while pursuing academic excellence. “Rivers State is a land of diverse cultures, traditions, and abundant resources. I commend the leadership of NURSS for this remarkable initiative,” he said.
Chief Beteh urged the students to be worthy ambassadors of their state, both within and beyond the walls of the university, while steering clear of vices that could tarnish their image or future. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the welfare of all Rivers students and encouraged them to connect with the broader Rivers community under the FURIBS umbrella.
One of the major highlights of the celebration was the display of local Rivers delicacies such as Apalapa, Onunu, and Okasi, generously presented by the various ethnic groups under the NURSS chapter. The culinary experience was a nostalgic reminder of home for many and an exciting discovery for others.
The FURIBS delegation also included notable figures such as HRH Nkemjika Orduve Joel, HRH Emman Ubaka, CSP Chief (Dr.) Clementina Wariso, Mrs. Gift Barisuka (First Lady of FURIBS), Mr. Manasseh Paul-Worika (FURIBS Director, Media), and Mr. Love Odereotiome (Chief of Staff to the FURIBS President).
As the drums faded and the event wound down, one thing was clear, the Rivers heritage remains as vibrant and enduring as ever, even in the hearts of the next generation.
