
Six Bayelsa Athletes make Team Nigeria for African Championship holding in Abeokuta
Six out of the eleven athletes who participated at the just concluded U-18/U-20 national trials for the Confederation of African Athletics, CAA at the Gateway International Stadium, Sagamu in Ogun State have made it to the camp of Team Nigeria.
Christian Dickson put every foot right, clinching the 110m hurdles U-20 men with a Personal Best of 14:43( -2.0) to win the race.
Also, Faye Perfect of SamKay Athletics Club, who missed a podium finish in the 100m U-18 boys, made up by winning the 200m U-18 event with a new Personal Best of 21:67 sec, while Johnbull Goodluck, also qualified for selection after finishing third in the U-18 400m event for boys.
SamKay’s Samson Tebowei also made the cut after finishing second in the 800m U-18 boys event, just as the duo of Perezide Sigah and Faith Ezechukwu made the team for the U-18 female 100m and 400m events respectively.
National Auditor of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, (AFN) Dr. Kolawole Oredipe who was full of praises for Team Bayelsa, commended them for their resilience.
Oredipe who is also the Vice-Chairman of the Bayelsa Athletics Association and Founder of SamKay Athletics Club, urged the athletes to be of good conduct and replicate their performance at the CAA scheduled to start on the 16th of July at the MKO Abiola stadium, Abeokuta.
In the meantime, the Head Coach of the Bayelsa State Athletics Association, Mr. Richard Torugbene, has also been invited to the Team Nigeria camp for the Confederation of African Athletics, CAA as one of the coaches to train the shortlisted sprinters for the games.
