
VIGC Inspires Young Bayelsan Girls to Leadership in Yenagoa
The Voice of the Ijaw Girl Child, VIGC has joined all other organizations to celebrate the 2025 International Day of the Girl Child with a gathering of young girls, women leaders and advocates.
The event which took place in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital is a celebration of the skills, strength, resilience and potentials of every girl child. It is also an opportunity to continue advocating for girls rights and ensuring that every girl has the opportunity to be leaders.
Speaking during the event, Executive Director, VIGC, Mrs Timipre Tobi Ebiranga noted that the special event to mark the day should be about equipping young girls with knowledge, skills, confidence and inspiration to overcome obstacles and pursue their dreams.
Mrs Ebiranga urged every girl child to rise above negative challenges, difficulties and peer pressure to achieve their dreams.
“Don’t allow circumstances to define who you are as a person, you are what you think you are, there’s nothing that is not achievable as long as you can put your mind to it, girls should break barriers, be a change wherever you are”
Also speaking, Chairperson of the International Federation of Female Lawyers, FIDA Bayelsa State, Barrister Boma Miebai called on every young girl to avoid distractions from boys, focus on their education to unlock their full potentials towards a brighter future.
Other speakers during the event were the Executive Director, Deborah Ebisinde Filatei, Women and Children Developmental Foundation, Dr Joan Filatei, Dr Kemelayefa Ogege, Mrs Dorcas Poyeri, Barrister Debywise Erebi, Pastor Mrs Rachael Asah, President of the Association of Community Traditional Birth Attendants, Mrs Rosemary Oweifaghawari member of GRIT and other women advocates.
They all focused on the ways in which girls can be supported in crisis situations and the roles that various organizations and individuals can play in empowering them.
Highpoint of the event was student performances, showcasing literary contest finalists and awards presentation to the winners.
