APC Governors Reject Wike’s ‘Rainbow Coalition’, Vow To Back Only Party Candidates
By Tams Jonah, ABUJA – The Progressives Governors Forum (PGF) has rejected political alliances capable of undermining the All Progressives Congress (APC), setting the stage for a potential clash with Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, over his proposed “Rainbow Coalition” in Rivers State.
Wike, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with close political ties to the APC, has been promoting what he described as a “Rainbow Coalition” in Rivers State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The proposed arrangement is expected to bring together politicians from both the PDP and APC to work towards shared political interests in the state.
However, the APC governors have now made it clear that they will not support any political arrangement that could weaken the party or its candidates at the state and national levels.
The position was announced after a closed-door meeting of the PGF in Abuja on Monday, September 14, with the Chairman of the Forum and Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma, reading the communique issued at the end of the meeting.
According to Uzodinma, the APC governors unanimously resolved not to participate in, support or endorse any political alliance or arrangement capable of undermining President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid, weakening the APC or adversely affecting any of its candidates.
The governors also maintained that their political commitment would remain exclusively with candidates fielded by the APC.
“In other words, the forum has no intention to support any candidate at any level that is not an APC candidate, because our candidates are being sponsored by our party,” Uzodinma said.
He added that the governors’ campaign commitment was exclusively to all APC candidates, stressing that the party would not entertain any arrangement capable of creating confusion, divided loyalty or conflicting interests among its members.
“No arrangement that causes confusion, divided loyalty, or conflicting interest within the party will be entertained,” he said.
The position could have significant implications for Wike’s proposed coalition in Rivers State as political realignments intensify ahead of the 2027 elections.
