Bayelsa PDP Faults 2026 Budget Performance, Describes N1.24trn 2027 Proposal as Unrealistic
By Our Correspondent –Â The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Bayelsa State has criticised the reported 15 per cent performance of the state’s 2026 budget, describing it as shameful and indicative of poor budget implementation.
The party also questioned the feasibility of Governor Douye Diri’s proposed N1.24 trillion 2027 budget, arguing that the administration had yet to demonstrate satisfactory implementation of its existing fiscal commitments.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, and signed by its State Publicity Secretary, Hon. Ikaebimo Mark, the PDP expressed concern that the low budget performance had failed to translate into meaningful improvements in the living conditions of residents.
It noted that many Bayelsans continued to grapple with multidimensional poverty, rising living costs, unemployment and limited access to essential services, stressing that the success of a budget should be measured by its impact on citizens rather than the amount appropriated.
The opposition party further argued that the proposed 2027 budget lacked sufficient clarity on practical interventions to address poverty, hunger and unemployment.
According to the PDP, Bayelsans require more than impressive budget figures, insisting that priority should be given to reliable electricity, functional healthcare, affordable education, food security, employment opportunities and an enabling environment for businesses and industries.
The party maintained that budgetary commitments must be backed by transparency, credible implementation and measurable improvements in the welfare of ordinary citizens.
It consequently called on the Bayelsa State House of Assembly to subject the proposed 2027 budget to rigorous, independent and transparent scrutiny rather than treating it as a document for automatic approval.
The PDP urged lawmakers to examine the budget’s underlying assumptions, interrogate its allocations and demand clear implementation targets that address the pressing needs of the state.
The statement added that the government must provide explanations on how the proposed N1.24 trillion spending plan would translate into tangible solutions to the economic and social challenges confronting Bayelsans.
