Bayelsa Property Development Authority MD Pledges To Sponsor Mentee’s PhD, Urges Privileged Nigerians To Lift Others
By Jonah Fubara, YENAGOA — The Managing Director of the Bayelsa State Property Development Authority, Tonye Emmanuel Isenah, has announced his commitment to sponsor the doctoral studies of one of his mentees, Matilda, describing the gesture as part of his belief in empowering others through education and mentorship.
Isenah made the disclosure in a Facebook post, where he recounted Matilda’s inspiring academic journey from overcoming body shaming in secondary school to earning a master’s degree and aspiring to obtain a PhD.
According to him, Matilda, an indigene of Sagbama Local Government Area who resides in Kaiama, recently reminded him that he had unknowingly become her mentor years ago after delivering a motivational talk at Federal Government College, Odi.
He explained that during their conversation, Matilda revealed that she had faced persistent body shaming while in secondary school and had considered abandoning her education. However, she said listening to his personal story during the school programme inspired her to ignore the negative comments and remain focused on her studies.
Isenah said the determination eventually paid off, as she successfully completed her master’s degree and now hopes to pursue a PhD.
“In recognition of her resilience and commitment to education, I have offered to sponsor her PhD,” he stated.
Reflecting on the experience, the Bayelsa Property Development Authority boss said the story serves as a reminder that people should never allow limitations imposed by others to define their future.
He also called on individuals who are privileged to become sources of encouragement and support for others rather than using their positions or resources to intimidate or oppress them.
According to him, true success is measured not only by personal achievements but also by the positive impact made in the lives of others.
The post has drawn positive reactions from social media users, with many commending Isenah for promoting mentorship and investing in education while encouraging young people to remain resilient in the face of challenges.
