FG Unveils 2026 Budget To Deepen Tinubu’s Economic Reforms — Idris
The Federal Government has described the 2026 Appropriation Bill as a critical instrument for consolidating the economic and social reforms being implemented under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, stated this in an opinion article titled “A Defining Moment for Nigeria: Why Staying the Course Matters,” published on Monday. He said early indicators suggest that the government’s reform policies are beginning to yield positive results.
According to the minister, the 2026 fiscal plan, tagged the “Budget of Consolidation, Renewed Resilience and Shared Prosperity,” is designed to deepen ongoing reforms and translate policy gains into tangible benefits for Nigerians, following about 31 months of what he described as difficult but necessary economic decisions.
Idris noted that recent economic indicators point to gradual recovery, citing expanding business activity, rising investor confidence, moderating inflation, and stronger external reserves as foundations for improved living standards.
He stressed that transparent and consistent communication remains essential to sustaining public trust, reaffirming his commitment to keeping Nigerians informed about government decisions, challenges, and progress.
On people-centred interventions, the minister highlighted initiatives such as the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) programme, and youth empowerment schemes including the Labour Employment and Empowerment Programme (LEEP), the Jubilee Fellows Programme, and the 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) initiative. He also pointed to efforts to strengthen food security through increased agricultural financing and mechanisation.
Idris further listed major infrastructure projects underway, including the Coastal Highway, the Sokoto–Badagry Expressway, the Ajaokuta–Kaduna–Kano (AKK) Gas Pipeline, and new rail lines aimed at cutting logistics costs and improving national connectivity.
On security, he said the government has intensified recruitment, upgraded equipment, and strengthened international partnerships, citing the recent rescue of abducted students in Kebbi and Niger states as evidence of renewed commitment to public safety.
While acknowledging ongoing challenges, the minister urged Nigerians to remain forward-looking, engage constructively in nation-building, resist misinformation, and support the administration’s reform agenda as it works toward shared prosperity.
