Armed Forces Remembrance Day: Tinubu, National Assembly, FCT Minister Pledge N320 Million to Nigerian Legion
President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday donated N200 million to the Nigerian Legion, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to the welfare of military personnel, injured officers, and the families of fallen heroes.
In State House release, Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President (Information & Strategy) noted that Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Deputy Speaker Hon. Benjamin Kalu contributed N100 million on behalf of the National Assembly, while FCT Minister Nyesom Wike added N20 million at the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Emblem Appeal launch at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
During the ceremony, President Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, the Senate President, Deputy Speaker, and service chiefs were decorated with the remembrance poppy by Morenike Grace Henry, Chairman of the Nigerian Legion.
President Tinubu urged individuals, businesses, and institutions to support the legion, which provides care for retirees and widows of fallen soldiers. He praised the military for their sacrifices in preserving national unity and security, noting their role in restoring stability in conflict-affected communities.
“Our Armed Forces have shown exceptional courage. Tens of thousands of insurgents have surrendered, terrorist leaders neutralized, and many captives freed. Maritime security has improved, with oil theft, piracy, and illegal fishing curtailed,” the President said.
He also highlighted improvements in troop welfare, including upgraded barracks, enhanced allowances, healthcare expansion, and modernization of pensions verification.
Chief of Defence Staff, Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, described the emblem as a symbol of solidarity with veterans and families of fallen heroes, while Ministry of Defence Permanent Secretary Mr. Richard Pheelangwa commended the President for restoring dignity to communities previously affected by conflict.
“Behind every secured territory are men and women whose courage defines our nation. Some bear visible scars, others paid the ultimate price. Today, we honour their bravery and devotion,” Pheelangwa said.
Armed Forces Remembrance Day is observed every January 15 to honour fallen soldiers and recognise the service of living veterans.
