Human Trafficking Destroys Futures, NAPTIP Commander Warns Students in Bayelsa
Ebis Freeman, YENAGOA – The Bayelsa State Command of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has intensified its campaign against human trafficking, warning students and teachers about the devastating consequences of the crime and other forms of abuse.
The warning was delivered during a sensitization programme held on Tuesday at St. Jude’s Model Secondary School, Amarata, Yenagoa, as part of the agency’s ongoing efforts to create awareness on the dangers of human trafficking, child abuse, and Violence Against Persons (VAP).
Speaking on behalf of the State Commander, Mrs. Ngozi Opara, the Head of the Public Enlightenment Unit, Mr. Sambo Wariebi, described human trafficking as a serious threat that destroys lives, deprives victims of opportunities, and exposes them to exploitation and abuse.
Mr. Wariebi educated students and teachers on the common indicators of human trafficking and urged them to remain vigilant at all times. He advised students to be cautious of suspicious offers and the company they keep, stressing that traffickers often prey on young and unsuspecting individuals.
He further encouraged members of the school community to promptly report suspected cases of human trafficking to the Bayelsa State Command of NAPTIP through its office or official communication channels.
According to him, collective vigilance and timely reporting are crucial in the fight against trafficking and related offences.
Responding on behalf of the school management, Mrs. Ebi Teibowei, who represented the Principal, expressed appreciation to NAPTIP for the educational visit and the valuable information shared with students and teachers.
She noted that the sensitization programme had enhanced awareness among members of the school community and pledged that teachers would continue to disseminate the knowledge gained to help protect more young people from falling victim to traffickers.
As part of the awareness campaign, NAPTIP distributed Information, Education and Communication (IEC) materials to reinforce the message against human trafficking and other related crimes.
The event concluded with students and teachers pledging their support for the agency’s efforts and promising to report suspicious activities that may threaten the safety and well-being of children and vulnerable persons.
The sensitization programme forms part of NAPTIP’s broader strategy to curb human trafficking and safeguard the rights and dignity of citizens across Bayelsa State.
