Imo Police Detain Officers Over N100,000 Bribe Scandal in Rape Case
The Imo State Police Command has detained some of its officers following allegations that they demanded a N100,000 bribe to investigate the rape of a 15-year-old girl.
The action followed a viral social media video posted by the victim’s sister, who accused officers at a divisional police station of extorting the family before taking up the case. The video triggered widespread public outrage and prompted an immediate response from the police authorities.
Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer, Henry Okoye, said the officers implicated in the allegation, including a Divisional Police Officer (DPO), have been arrested and will face an orderly room trial scheduled to begin on January 12.
According to Okoye, the Imo State Commissioner of Police ordered a thorough investigation into the matter to ensure accountability and restore public confidence in the force.
Meanwhile, the suspect in the rape case, identified as Wisdom Onyeaju, has been arrested after being tracked to his hideout in Irete. He is currently in custody at the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
The police said the suspect will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations, assuring the public that justice will be served both for the victim and in addressing the alleged misconduct of its officers.
