
Literary and Cultural Groups Set to Honour Comish Ekiye in Yenagoa
By Victor Oroyi, Yenagoa – Prominent literary, media and cultural organisations in Bayelsa and Rivers States are set to celebrate renowned writer and dramatist, Comish Ekiye, in a special event titled “Requiem of 9 Scenes” scheduled to hold on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, at the Gabriel Okara Cultural Centre.
The event, billed for 3:00 p.m. prompt, is expected to bring together lovers of literature, theatre, culture and the arts in honour of the playwright’s contributions to storytelling and creative expression.
According to details displayed on the official event banner, participating organisations include the Association of Nigerian Authors, Rivers State Television, Rivers State Council for Arts and Culture, Bayelsa Classic Choir, Bayelsa State Council for Arts and Culture, and Radio Bayelsa.
The programme will feature performances and presentations inspired by some of Comish Ekiye’s notable works, including The Family, Machete, Friends, The Enemy, Strange Affair, and Dream Dance. Other featured scenes listed for presentation include The Cycle, You Can’t Take Your Wife To New York, Song of Desire, Obigbo Connection, and Mending Socks.
Organisers say the event will serve as both a celebration of artistic excellence and a reflection on the enduring relevance of theatre and literature in promoting cultural identity, social consciousness and creative heritage in the Niger Delta.
The ceremony will take place at the Gabriel Okara Cultural Centre in Yenagoa, with cultural enthusiasts, theatre practitioners and members of the creative industry expected to attend from across the region.
Comish Ekiye passed away on January 12, 2026.
