Monica Beyond the Noise: A Story of Resilience, Responsibility, and Silent Strength
By Victor Oroyi – Whilst many are critical of the character of Mama Monica in the trending YouTube movie Monica Part 2, produced by Uche Montana and directed by Chidi Chiojoke, there are silent life lessons being ignored.
Monica, the central character, is the first child and first daughter of her parents. In the Igbo traditional setting, this position comes with a lot of responsibilities—not just towards the parents but also siblings. This is where the Gen Z generation judges Mama Monica wrongly without learning the lessons.
This piece is not about Mama Monica but about Monica and her survival instincts—the lessons to learn from her trajectory of personal growth, and the burden of bearing parental and family responsibilities.
The first part of Monica, released about a month earlier, reveals the torture and high-handedness of Mama Monica, yet Monica’s respect for her mother remained intact. For every command, she obeyed; for every instruction, she followed.
Respect in African culture is not just a rule but a show of loyalty, submissiveness, and obedience. It is a determinant of proper upbringing. To be disrespectful is seen as a lack of home training, as displayed by Bobo’s young wife. For Monica, at every given time, she must be respectful.
When it became unbearable, Monica moved out of her father’s house—but to where?
Her leaving was an act of disrespect, yes—but the circumstances had changed. Bobo and his wife raised their hands against her; rather cautiously, Mama Monica took sides with her son.
Now, many young people would have made the mistake of immediately finding a place to stay. Monica chose to remain in her tailoring shop despite the inconveniences.
She had the option of staying with a friend or moving in with a man. You will agree with me that most girls would choose comfort.
Monica chose a path of growth and expansion. Excelling in any chosen career comes with sacrifice and training. She had a vision and followed through with it.
One important lesson is Monica’s saving culture. She is never stranded. She paid her father’s hospital bills, supported Bobo’s business, and funded her fashion training. She never depended on a man; through her business, she grew to become who she is.
Beyond the criticism of Mama Monica, Monica as a trending YouTube movie has many lessons for young people to learn—from respect and contentment to resilience, focus, and self-drive. Monica is an inspiration to Nigerian youth waiting on the government to provide everything for them.
The role of Monica is interpreted by fast-rising actress, filmmaker, and YouTuber, Uche Montana.
