NAPTIP Bayelsa Raises Awareness on Human Trafficking Through Radio Programme Ahead of World Day
By Ebis Freeman, YENAGOA – The Bayelsa State Command of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has stepped up public sensitisation efforts ahead of the 2026 World Day Against Trafficking in Persons with a live radio programme aimed at educating residents on the dangers of human trafficking.
The Bayelsa State Commander of NAPTIP, Mrs. Ngozi Opara, featured as a guest on Insight, a live current affairs programme on Radio Nigeria Creek FM 106.5, Ekeki Road, Yenagoa, on Wednesday. The 45-minute programme, which aired from 9:15 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., formed part of activities lined up to commemorate this year’s World Day Against Trafficking in Persons on July 30.
Speaking on the 2026 global theme, “Trapped Behind the Scam,” Mrs. Opara warned that human traffickers are increasingly using online platforms to advertise fake employment, educational and travel opportunities to lure unsuspecting victims.
She urged members of the public to verify every opportunity before making commitments, stressing that many fraudulent offers circulating on social media and other digital platforms are designed to exploit vulnerable individuals.
The NAPTIP Commander also called on government agencies, security organisations, traditional rulers, religious institutions, civil society groups and community leaders to strengthen collaboration with the agency in combating human trafficking across Bayelsa State and Nigeria.
Mrs. Opara further advised parents and guardians to pay closer attention to their teenage children, particularly girls, by monitoring their friendships, online activities and movements to reduce their vulnerability to traffickers.
According to her, protecting children begins with awareness, open communication and active parental guidance.
At the conclusion of the programme, the Command’s hotline and official email address were announced to encourage members of the public to report suspected cases of human trafficking and other related offences for prompt investigation and action.
The World Day Against Trafficking in Persons is observed annually on July 30 to promote global awareness of human trafficking, support victims and encourage coordinated efforts to end all forms of human exploitation.
