Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) Bayelsa Chapter has called on the public to join the fight against substance abuse as the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is commemorated today, June 26, 2025.
In a statement signed by Chairperson of the Association, Mrs.Grace Orumieyefa, and Assistant Secretary, Mrs. Deintei Emmanuel-Otavie, the Association emphasizes the devastating impact of drug abuse on individuals, families, and communities.
It reiterates that this year’s theme, “Breaking the Chains: Prevention, Treatment, and Recovery for All!”, underscores the need for a comprehensive approach to address the scourge of drug abuse which has proven to be a catalyst for various societal ills, including crime, violence, and moral decay.
Mrs. Orumieyefa notes that drug abuse undermines the fabric of our communities, fuels organized crime, and ravages public health services. The consequences of drug abuse are far-reaching, affecting not only individuals but also families and the broader society.
The statement reads in part: “We urge the public to support evidence-based prevention and treatment programs, promote awareness about the risks of drug abuse, and advocate for policies prioritizing public health and human rights. By working together, we can build a society where individuals and communities are empowered to make informed choices about their health and well-being, and where drug abuse is addressed with compassion, understanding, and effective solutions.”
NAWOJ Bayelsa reiterates its commitment to raising awareness and promoting collective action against drug abuse.
The Association calls on all stakeholders to join hands in the fight against substance abuse and work towards creating a brighter future for our communities.
