By Dim Oba, LAGOS –Â Nigerian poet, lawyer and human rights advocate, Ogaga Ifowodo, has won the 2026 NLNG Nigeria Prize for Literature with his poetry collection, Why Does God Need a Gun?, earning the prestigious $100,000 prize.
The award recognises Ifowodo’s literary contribution and the power of poetry to confront injustice, preserve historical memory and explore the human consequences of political violence.
Ifowodo, whose works draw on Nigeria’s political history, democratic struggles and the realities of the Niger Delta, has established himself as a prominent literary voice whose writing examines oppression, environmental degradation and the experiences of communities affected by violence.
His winning collection reflects his broader literary concerns, connecting personal suffering with questions of national identity, political responsibility and the human condition.
Beyond his achievements in literature, Ifowodo has distinguished himself as a lawyer, essayist, scholar, public commentator and human rights advocate. His professional career spans legal practice, academic scholarship, journalism, civic engagement and public service.
In 2014, he sought a political party’s nomination to contest for a seat in the House of Representatives. Two years later, in 2016, he was appointed a commissioner on the board of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), representing Delta State. He served on the board until 2019.
His career reflects the intersection of literary creativity, the defence of human rights and public engagement, with his writing offering a critical perspective on the political and social challenges confronting Nigeria.
The 2026 award adds another significant milestone to Ifowodo’s literary journey and brings renewed attention to poetry as a medium for documenting history, challenging injustice and amplifying voices that might otherwise remain unheard.
His achievement is also a moment of recognition for Nigerian and African literature, particularly poetry that engages with the region’s political realities, cultural identity and environmental challenges.
The NLNG Nigeria Prize for Literature is one of Nigeria’s most prestigious literary awards, with a $100,000 prize for the winning entry.
Ifowodo’s victory is expected to inspire emerging writers and reinforce the relevance of literary expression in shaping public discourse and deepening society’s understanding of its history and shared experiences.
