Senator Dickson Mourns Music Legend Jimmy Cliff, Hails His Global Cultural Legacy
Former Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of globally acclaimed reggae icon, James Chambers, popularly known as Jimmy Cliff, whose death was announced on Tuesday.
In a heartfelt condolence message, Senator Dickson described Jimmy Cliff as a foremost music and cultural figure whose influence transcended borders, generations and race.
He noted that Cliff’s music shaped the consciousness of millions across the world, including his own generation.
“I express my heartfelt condolences to the family and fans of the foremost music and cultural icon, Jimmy Cliff,” Dickson said. “There is no doubt that his music inspired many — not only in his native Jamaica and among Black people, but across the world.”
The former governor revealed that during his time in office, he had looked forward to inviting the reggae legend to Bayelsa, as part of a broader cultural initiative that had previously brought global stars such as Earl Klugh, Miriam Makeba, Hugh Masekela and others to the state to promote arts, entertainment and tourism.
Describing himself as an “incurable lover of the arts,” Dickson said Jimmy Cliff’s classics remain timeless and continue to resonate.
“His music had a tremendous impact on my generation. We were fortunate to have cultural giants like him, Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and many more,” he stated.
Senator Dickson also highlighted Africa’s own rich heritage of musical icons, including Fela Anikulapo Kuti, Rex Jim Lawson, Osadebe, Sir Victor Uwaifo, King Robert Ebizimor, and living legends such as King Sunny Ade and Ebenezer Obey, noting that their works equally shaped societal values and global culture.
“At his passing, we are reminded of his iconic classics — a lasting gift he made to the world,” Dickson added, disclosing that he spent part of the day listening to some of the late musician’s timeless songs.
He prayed for the repose of Jimmy Cliff’s soul and affirmed that the legend’s influence will continue to be celebrated for generations to come.
“May his soul rest in peace, and may his legacy continue to be celebrated,” he concluded.
