SSDC Rushes Relief Materials to Flood-Hit Bayelsa Communities
By Jonah Fubara, YENAGOA –Â The South-South Development Commission (SSDC) has delivered relief materials to vulnerable households and communities affected by flooding and other environmental emergencies in Bayelsa State, with a promise of further humanitarian support.
The intervention, carried out on Friday, October 23, 2026, is aimed at cushioning the impact of environmental emergencies on affected residents and improving their welfare.
The relief materials were presented by the SSDC’s Executive Director of Social Services and Human Capital Development, Engr. Preye Aganaba, who represented the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the commission, Ms. Usoro Akpabio.
The materials were handed over to the Director-General of the Bayelsa State Emergency Management Agency (BYSEMA), Hon. Walamam Samuel Igrubia, accompanied by directors Dr. Yaibimi Ayogoi Simeon and Amiefamonyo Briade Fredrick, for onward distribution to beneficiaries.
Aganaba said the intervention covered selected vulnerable households and communities, adding that more beneficiaries would receive assistance in subsequent phases.
The items provided include cooking utensils, sleeping materials and other livelihood support intended to help affected households cope with the consequences of flooding and other environmental emergencies.
He expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting that the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda provided a foundation for the commission to pursue its mandate of supporting development and improving livelihoods across the South-South region.
The SSDC executive director also commended Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, for his administration’s efforts towards citizens’ welfare, infrastructure development and environmental management.
He reserved special praise for Akpabio for her leadership and continued support, while acknowledging the contributions of the commission’s staff and partner agencies to the successful delivery of the intervention.
Aganaba emphasised that the commission’s humanitarian activities were designed to complement, rather than duplicate, the efforts of the Bayelsa State Government.
The intervention forms part of the SSDC’s broader commitment to addressing the needs of vulnerable populations and supporting communities facing environmental and socioeconomic challenges across the South-South region.
The commission expressed optimism that continued collaboration with state governments and relevant agencies would help build safer, stronger and more resilient communities.
