VIGC, Partners Advocate Against GBV, Trafficking, Teenage Pregnancy in Tombia Town

As part of activities to combat gender based violence, reduce teenage pregnancy and raise awareness about human trafficking, a non governmental organization, Voice of the Ijaw Girl Child (VIGC), in collaboration with Deborah Ebisinde Filate Women and Children Developmental Foundation, DEFWAC has organized a Community Sensitization Program in Tombia Town.

The program held at the Tombia Community Hall brought together community leaders, youths, parents and various stakeholders for a day of learning, open dialogue and strategic actions focused on educating residents about Gender Based Violence, the role of the family, community and individuals in ending GBV, drug abuse, mental health, family planning as well as the importance of Personal hygiene.

In her opening remark, Executive Director, Voice of the Ijaw Girl Child, Mrs Timipre Ebiranga emphasized the urgent need to educate rural communities on the preventive measures surrounding gender based violence and teenage pregnancy.

“Many of our young girls are being left alone to themselves and this caused so many unplanned pregnancies, our girls please add pride to yourself, have self worth, learn to make a difference and impact in the society, let us not repeat the mistakes of the past”

Mrs Ebiranga appealed to teenage mothers not to give up on themselves but to embrace change through education and personal development to improve themselves.

She also called on parents and community leaders to play a more active role in safeguarding the welfare of children and adolescents.

Speaking on the topic, Puberty and Personal Hygiene, Miss Praise Charles advised youths to take proper care of their bodies by bathing regularly and keeping their clothes clean.

She also advised parents to know that teenagers have heightened emotions during puberty hence they should be more understanding and tolerant in their relationship with them.

Also speaking on the topic Sexually Transmitted Diseases, STIs and Family Planning, Miss Blessing Ademolu exposed participants to the various methods of family planning and how to prevent STIs and body infections.

Barrister Marian Akpoyi-Ouserigha, Treasurer of the International Federation of Women Lawyers, FIDA, Bayelsa State chapter, educated participants on the various laws that protect them from violence emphasizing that there are laws prohibiting online violence and stalking.

Mrs Ruth Okoni Walter who spoke on the role of the family in ending Gender Based Violence, GBV encouraged participants to always speak up.

Founder, Passion with Debbie Initiative, Mrs Debbie Boro Waritimi speaking on the topic Consent, Self worth and Making Informed Choices, advised parents to teach their children on how to say no to all forms of immorality adding that they should not use negative words on their children.

On her part, Chief Executive Officer, ENWAF Lady Eunice Nnachi who addressed the increasing threat of human trafficking urged parents to be cautious as many young people are being lured with false promises of jobs and education.

Lady Nnachi urged parents to educate their children on the tactics used by traffickers and report any suspicious activities to appropriate authorities.

Earlier, Secretary, Okun-in- Council, Chief Beiteye Otobo urged the youths particularly young girls to listen attentively to the lectures and not allow themselves to be deceived by men who are only out to exploit their vulnerability.

Highpoint of the event was the empowerment training and presentation of starter packs to some residents.
