VIGC, Stemic Care Foundation to Mark International Day of the Girl Child in Bayelsa
By Jonah Fubara, YENAGOA – Voice of the Ijaw Girl Child (VIGC), in partnership with Stemic Care Foundation, will on Saturday, October 17, 2026, celebrate the International Day of the Girl Child with a call for increased investment in girls’ rights and an end to child marriage.
The event, scheduled for 9:00 a.m. at the Chief D.S.P. Alamieyeseigha Banquet Hall, Government House, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, will bring together young people, parents, educators, community leaders, stakeholders and advocates to promote the rights, welfare and empowerment of the girl child.
With the theme, “Empowering Her Future,” the celebration will feature a campaign titled “End Child Marriage, Invest in Girls’ Rights,” highlighting the need to protect girls from harmful practices and create opportunities for them to realise their full potential.
The organisers said the initiative was designed to strengthen advocacy for the protection of girls’ rights while encouraging families, institutions and relevant stakeholders to invest in their education, personal development and future.
The campaign also seeks to draw attention to the challenges confronting the girl child, particularly child marriage, and the importance of creating a society where girls can grow, learn and pursue their aspirations without discrimination or practices that threaten their well-being.
Participants are expected to use the occasion to renew their commitment to safeguarding the rights of girls and promoting an environment that supports their development, participation and contribution to society.
Registration for the event is free but compulsory, with interested participants encouraged to register ahead of the celebration through the organisers’ online registration form.
The International Day of the Girl Child is observed annually to recognise the rights of girls and highlight the challenges they face worldwide, while promoting actions that advance their empowerment and equal opportunities.
The VIGC and Stemic Care Foundation partnership underscores the importance of collective action in ensuring that the girl child is protected, supported and equipped to contribute meaningfully to the development of her community and society at large.
