BananaBox TV Accused of Unfair Content Restrictions on Nollywood Promotions
By Our Entertainment Correspondent
Lagos— A wave of criticism has erupted within the Nollywood creative space following allegations against BananaBox TV, a popular digital distribution platform, over what industry stakeholders describe as unfair and counterproductive content practices.
Promoters and content creators have accused BananaBox TV of monetizing Nollywood films that are not originally its intellectual property, while simultaneously placing restrictions on the use of movie clips by promoters who are paid to create visibility for the same films. According to the aggrieved promoters, this practice undermines marketing efforts and creates unnecessary bottlenecks in film promotion.
One promoter, who spoke on condition of anonymity, expressed frustration over the policy. “Producers pay us to promote their movies. Yet, after BananaBox monetizes these films, they go ahead to block or restrict us from using short clips for publicity. How is that fair?” the promoter queried.
Industry observers argue that promotional clips are essential tools for audience engagement in the digital age, especially on social media platforms where short video snippets drive traffic and awareness. They insist that restricting such use, while profiting from the same content, is contradictory and harmful to the growth of Nollywood.
Another stakeholder described the approach as “selfish and counterproductive,” noting that visibility generated by promoters ultimately benefits producers, distributors, and hosting platforms alike. “Promotion is a collective effort. You cannot profit from content and then shut out those helping to push it to wider audiences,” the source said.
As the debate continues, calls are growing for clearer content usage policies and fair collaboration between digital platforms, producers, and promoters. Many within the industry believe that resolving these concerns is crucial to sustaining goodwill and ensuring the continued expansion of Nollywood’s global reach.
Efforts to obtain an official response from BananaBox TV on the allegations were unsuccessful as of press time.
