BANGOF Sensitizes Communities on Cholera Prevention

The Bayelsa State Nongovernmental Organizations Forum (BANGOF) has intensified efforts to curb the spread of cholera and other waterborne diseases through a public health sensitization campaign in Okaka and Ekeki communities in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital.

During the outreach, residents were educated on the importance of regular hand washing with soap and clean water, proper disposal of waste, safe food handling, and the use of clean drinking water.

Speaking at the event, the Chairman of BANGOF, Mr. Taritein Boco explained that cholera is mainly spread through contaminated water and food, emphasizing the need for improved hygiene and sanitation at the household and community levels.

Mr Boco described community sensitization as a powerful tool in preventing disease outbreaks adding that many cases of cholera can be avoided if people adopt simple but consistent hygiene practices.

“When you notice vomiting and stooling that looks like rice water, then it is cholera, quickly visit the nearest health center for treatment because delay can be dangerous, it can lead to death, the government will not do this for us, it is
our collective responsibility to maintain clean surroundings and protect ourselves from contaminated water and food”

Mr. Boco appealed to residents to promptly seek medical attention at health facilities if they notice symptoms such as persistent diarrhea or vomiting, stressing that early response can save lives.

Also addressing residents, the Executive Director of Women Organized for Mentorship and Advocacy Network (WOMAN), Lady Eunice Nnachi, highlighted the vulnerability of women and children to cholera outbreaks.

She stressed that empowering women with accurate health information is essential, as they play a major role in food preparation, water storage, and childcare at home.

In her remarks, Princess Elizabeth Egbe, Chief Executive Officer of Global Care Rescue Mission, encouraged residents to take the information seriously and share it with neighbors, family members, and friends adding that information sharing can significantly reduce the spread of preventable diseases, especially in densely populated areas.

On his part, Secretary of BANGOF, Mr Inatimi Odio who spoke to residents in Nembe local government area advised them to ensure that they wash their hands regularly as this method is very effective in prevention of Cholera and other diseases.

The sensitization exercise in Okaka and Ekeki communities follows earlier outreach programs conducted by BANGOF in Sagbama and Nembe Local Government Areas. These activities are part of the forum’s ongoing commitment to promoting public health awareness and supporting disease prevention efforts across Bayelsa State.

BANGOF reaffirmed its dedication to collaborating with government agencies, community stakeholders, and civil society organizations to ensure healthier and safer communities throughout the state.
