Bishop Mike Okonkwo Pays Tribute to Uma Ukpai: “A Spiritual Giant Sleeps” — Heartfelt Message on His Passing
LAGOS, Nigeria — In an emotional tribute that has touched thousands across social media, Bishop Mike Okonkwo, Presiding Bishop of The Redeemed Evangelical Mission (TREM), has penned a heartfelt message titled “A Spiritual Giant Sleeps,” mourning the passing of Rev. Dr. Uma Ukpai, one of Nigeria’s most revered faith leaders.
Bishop Okonkwo opened his message with a deeply reflective line: “In local parlance, an Iroko has fallen…”—a powerful metaphor that captures the magnitude of loss felt within Nigeria’s Christian community.
“It feels just like the other day we were together, celebrating God’s faithfulness in your life at your 80th birthday,” Bishop Okonkwo wrote. “Since receiving the news of your passing into glory, it has been difficult to grasp and come to terms with.”
The TREM founder described Rev. Ukpai as a spiritual colossus, a man whose ministry “impacted multitudes and bore fruit in countless lives.” He emphasized that though the pain of loss is deep, there is divine comfort in the assurance of eternal rest.
“We are comforted by the truth that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord,” he added.
Rev. Uma Ukpai, founder of Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association (UUEA), was widely celebrated for his evangelistic crusades, mentorship, and enduring influence in shaping the faith of generations. Known for his humility, fervent preaching, and unwavering belief in God’s power, Ukpai’s legacy continues to echo across Nigeria and beyond.
Bishop Okonkwo concluded his tribute with touching finality:
“You served the Lord wholeheartedly till your very last breath, and I believe you’ve now heard those precious words: ‘Well done, good and faithful servant.’ Uma, now you rest in the bosom of the Lord. Till we meet again at the Master’s feet.”
The passing of Rev. Uma Ukpai marks the end of an era in Nigerian Christianity — the transition of a man whose life embodied faith, service, and dedication to the gospel. His journey remains a testament to unwavering devotion and the timeless impact of spiritual leadership.
