SERAP Urges Tinubu to Probe Alleged AI-Generated Voter Photos
By Tams Jonah, ABUJA –Â The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on President Bola Tinubu to direct an investigation into allegations involving the use of suspected artificial intelligence-generated photographs in voter-related records.
The organisation also wants the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) to establish whether personal data were unlawfully altered or accessed and determine if the incidents constitute violations of the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023.
SERAP’s demand follows concerns over the alleged appearance of AI-generated photographs in voter-related materials, raising questions about the integrity of personal information and the security of Nigeria’s electoral data.
The organisation is seeking an investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged alterations, identify those responsible and determine whether existing data protection safeguards were breached.
It further emphasised the need to protect citizens’ personal information from unauthorised access, manipulation and misuse, particularly where such data are connected to the electoral process.
The call places renewed focus on the implications of emerging artificial intelligence technologies for electoral integrity, data privacy and public confidence in democratic institutions.
SERAP’s intervention also highlights the responsibility of relevant government agencies to ensure that personal data are processed lawfully and that any suspected breach is thoroughly investigated.
The Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 provides a legal framework for protecting personal information and regulating how organisations collect, process, store and use individuals’ data.
