Ignore the Gossip, Focus on Your Peace – Funke Akindele Tells Women
Popular Nollywood actress and filmmaker, Funke Akindele, has urged women to ignore societal pressure and remain confident in their personal journeys, especially when faced with criticism about marriage and age.
The award-winning actress gave the advice while reflecting on the growing culture of online mockery and gossip directed at women who are unmarried after many years. According to her, paying attention to such negative comments can harm one’s emotional wellbeing and lead to poor life decisions.
Akindele said many women are often labelled “boring” or ridiculed simply because they have not married within society’s expected timeline.
“I also tell women to ignore people who mock their age and status,” she said. “Some people will say that a woman is boring because she has not married after many years. They will talk and gossip and type many unkind things. If you stay listening to them, you can damage your soul and make the wrong choices.”
Speaking further in what she described as a playful but serious tone, the Nollywood star advised women to protect their peace and focus on living life according to their own pace rather than societal expectations.
“So I say this in a playful but serious way. Ignore the gossip. Ignore the people who laugh at your journey. Focus on your own timing and your own peace,” she stated.
She added that personal happiness should never be sacrificed to satisfy public opinion.
“You do not owe anybody your joy. You only owe yourself a life that feels honest and calm inside,” Akindele added.
The actress’ message has since sparked conversations among fans and social media users, many of whom praised her for encouraging women to prioritize mental wellbeing and self-worth over societal pressure.
